What is this unique musical theater audition opportunity?

Usually CYT Santa Cruz invites youth ages 4 - 18 to join our programming. This time, CYT is inviting performers aged 18+ to partake in an open casting call audition to perform in a one night concert fundraiser on August 5th at The Rio Theatre in Santa Cruz. We also invite auditions from performers ages 12-18 for specific performance opportunities. Read more below to learn how this audition process will be different from our typical youth audition process.

The fundraiser will benefit CYT Santa Cruz so that we can continue to offer performing arts education and experience to our youth and present phenomenal, unique, lively shows to our community!

The event is a “Sondheim Tribute Revue” meaning that each performance will be derived from one of the many different works of renowned musical composer and lyricist, Stephen Sondheim. Sondheim passed in 2021 and we are honored to pay tribute to his life works that have and will continue to impact so many.

Information for all performers:

Please submit a recording of your singing audition (learn more within your specific age / interest group below) by Wednesday, May 31 to be considered for a performance slot.
Key Details: 
  • Due to the unique nature of this concert fundraiser - This audition process will resemble a professional audition, unlike CYT Santa Cruz’s typical youth performance auditions that are catered to youth only.
    • Auditions do not guarantee a performance slot 
    • The cast will be significantly smaller than a typical CYT youth performance
  • All performers must be in-person during Friday August 4th & all day Saturday August 5th and available for the performance on the evening of Saturday, August 5th. Please review the information below to learn other mandatory requirements for your specific age/interest group.

AUDITION FORM

OPTION 1: Soloists, duets & small groups - Ages 18+

This information is relevant to performers interested in performing a specific solo, duet or small group performance. Note: we may cast ensemble members as needed.
  • Please prepare and video record at least one to two full song(s) with music and lyrics by Sondheim that you would like to perform at the concert! Most Sondhiem songs are eligible for consideration; however, due to licensing, only songs with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim (i.e. no Gypsy or West Side Story) are permitted. 
  • Have fun & be creative! 
    • Examples: Songs that were originally written for one performer could be sung by multiple people. Songs originally created for a particular age or gender can be performed by an artist of different age or gender. Songs may also be choreographed rather than sung. Due to licensing, we are not able to consider scenes or monologues.
  • Rehearsals & Mandatory Dates: Rehearsals for solo, duet, and small group performances will primarily take place via Zoom to allow out of town performers to participate. The only mandatory in-person rehearsals for this option are Friday August 4th & all day Saturday August 5th. See the full production schedule for more details.

OPTION 2: Adult Ensemble - Ages 18+

This information is relevant to performers only interested in joining the ensemble of certain songs. 
  • Please learn and submit a video recording of yourself singing a 1-minute section of “No One is Alone” from Into the Woods. Sopranos/Altos please sing the “Cinderella” line. Tenors/Basses please sing the “Baker” line. Tracks and sheet music can be found here. Note that these tracks will include vocal accompaniment of other ranges.
  • Dance auditions will be accepted via video. Please submit your vocal audition to receive updated dance audition information. 
  • Rehearsals & Mandatory Dates: Rehearsals for ensemble members will be mandatory in-person rehearsals. See the full production schedule for more details.

Option #3: Youth Ensemble - Ages 12 - 17

  • Please prepare and submit a video recording of yourself singing the full song “Our Time” from Merrily We Roll Along, the musical. Tracks and sheet music can be found here. 
  • It is possible that a Youth Ensemble member may be considered for a solo in the older age group.
  • Rehearsals & Mandatory Dates: Rehearsals for youth ensemble members will be mandatory in-person rehearsals. See the full production schedule for more details.
